A Paarl bakery built around everyday comfort
Rusk was founded in 2009 in Paarl, where early mornings, mountain air and practical baking routines shape the way we work. We started with a simple idea: make rusks that taste like something you would put out at home, not a factory product pushed out in a hurry. That still guides us today. Our buttermilk rusks and muesli rusks are made for dunking, sharing and keeping on hand for when visitors arrive or the kettle goes on.
Being based in the Western Cape gives us good access to both local customers and national logistics, but it also means we have to think carefully about summer heat, coastal humidity in some delivery areas and the realities of load-shedding. We plan batches, packing times and dispatches with those conditions in mind so that the product arriving in your kitchen is in good shape. It sounds basic, because it is. Good rusk work depends on timing, clean handling and attention to the small things.
What we believe makes a proper rusk
We believe a rusk should be firm enough to last, but not so dry that it crumbles at the first touch. It should carry real flavour, hold up well in a mug and feel generous when served. That is why we focus on well-tested recipes, consistent ingredient selection and batch control. Our baking approach is practical and hands-on, with checks along the way rather than shortcuts at the end.
Our values are straightforward. We want to offer dependable quality, honest service and a product that fits into ordinary South African homes. We also want to keep things clear for customers, whether they are ordering one pack for themselves or arranging regular supply for a guesthouse, office pantry or fundraiser. In our view, trust is built when the product arrives as expected, the communication is clear and the packing is neat.
- Consistent taste from batch to batch
- Careful ingredient handling and packing
- Friendly help for small and large orders
- Respect for deadlines and delivery planning
How the baking team keeps things steady
Our team works with clearly defined roles so that orders move smoothly from production to packing and then on to dispatch. Marli van der Merwe oversees the business direction as Managing Director, while Thabo Mokoena keeps operations moving and helps coordinate day to day flow. Anika Smit leads the baking side, with Liyema Jacobs supervising production to make sure each batch meets the standard we expect. Zanele Khumalo manages customer orders and Pieter le Roux handles wholesale accounts, which helps us give proper attention to both home buyers and trade clients.
We do not treat a small order as less important than a bulk one. A single sample box still needs accurate packing, and a wholesale run still needs reliable counts and careful sealing. That attitude shapes how we work at every stage. It also means we stay practical about things like stock rotation, order cut-offs and courier collection times, especially when power interruptions or weather can affect timing. A little planning saves a lot of stress later.
- Order checks before packing starts
- Batch monitoring for size, colour and texture
- Neat labelling for easy handling on arrival
- Dispatch coordination for local and nationwide deliveries
Serving homes, shops and hospitality clients
Although many people buy rusks for their own kitchen, a large part of our work supports businesses and community groups. We supply wholesale customers, hospitality venues, corporate gifting projects, event organisers and fundraiser orders. Some clients want regular replenishment for guest rooms or reception areas, while others need custom hampers for year end gifting or conference packs. We also provide subscription packs and sample boxes for those who want a regular supply or want to try the range first.
Our local stockist network in Paarl, Wellington, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch, Somerset West and Durbanville gives customers more ways to find us close to home, while nationwide delivery means the rest of South Africa is not left out. We work with people who need a few boxes and with buyers who need structured supply over time. The same careful packing applies either way, because rusks need to arrive intact and presentable, not scattered at the bottom of a carton.
Why customers keep coming back
People usually come back for the taste first, then for the service. A good rusk should feel familiar and dependable, whether it is served at a breakfast table, in the office kitchen or with a late afternoon cup of coffee. We hear from customers who like the home-style feel of the product, and from buyers who appreciate being able to place repeat orders without chasing updates. That combination matters to us because it tells us we are doing more than baking, we are helping people keep a small routine going.
We also pay attention to practical details that matter in South Africa. Couriers need clear addresses, customers need communication that is easy to follow, and trade buyers need lead times they can actually plan around. When temperatures rise or road delays happen, we try to keep customers informed and avoid unnecessary back and forth. It is not fancy, but it works, and that is what most people want when they are ordering food items.

A simple promise we work to every day
Our promise is simple: make good rusks, pack them properly and treat customers fairly. We are not trying to overcomplicate a product that has always belonged in South African kitchens. Instead, we aim to keep the process clear from first enquiry to final delivery. That means honest communication, measured production and a practical understanding of what clients need when they order for home, business or events.
Rusk is still guided by the same basic idea that started the business in 2009. Make something comforting, keep the standards high and do the work with care. If a customer opens a box and finds rusks that look neat, smell right and hold together well in the mug, then we have done our job properly. That is the kind of result we build for every day, and its what we want to be known for across South Africa.
