Careers

A hands-on team in Paarl

Our base in Paarl serves customers from the Western Cape and beyond, with deliveries, wholesale supply and gift orders moving out across the country. The work is steady and practical, and it suits people who are organised, reliable and able to work well with others. In summer the bakery can get warm, and in winter early starts are part of the routine so punctuality matters.

We are a small team with clear responsibilities, from production and packing through to customer orders and wholesale accounts. Everyone needs to pull their weight, especially when large orders come in for shops, offices, guest houses and events. If you like being part of a place where the day has a proper rhythm, you will fit in well.

Roles we often hire for

We do not always have the same vacancies open, but we regularly look for people in the following areas:

  • Bakery assistants and production support
  • Packers and dispatch staff
  • Customer orders and admin support
  • Drivers and delivery coordination
  • Wholesale account support
  • Junior baking staff with a good attitude and willingness to learn

Experience helps, but it is not the only thing we consider. A careful eye for clean workspaces, food handling and stock control goes a long way. If you have worked with baked goods, retail orders, or general food production before, tell us clearly what you have done.

What we look for in an applicant

We prefer people who are dependable, respectful and willing to learn proper bakery routines. You should be comfortable working with your hands, following instructions and keeping to product standards. A calm manner helps when orders are busy and there are time pressures from stockists, hospitality customers or fundraising packs.

  • Good communication and a steady work ethic
  • Attention to hygiene and food safety
  • Ability to work with early starts and busy periods
  • Basic numeracy for counting stock and checking orders
  • Willingness to work in a team and ask questions when needed

We value practical people who take pride in doing simple things properly. You do not need to be flashy, just honest, dependable and ready to learn.

How to send your CV

If you would like to be considered for future openings, email your CV to bakery@rusk.co.za. Please include your name, contact details, the town you live in, and the type of work you are looking for. If you have a driving licence, forklift experience, baking experience or any food safety training, mention that as well. A short note about your availability is useful too.

We review applications as they come in and keep details on file for suitable opportunities. If you are applying for a specific type of role, say so plainly. It helps us match the right person to the right job and saves time for everyone.

Working conditions and practical details

Our work is based in Paarl, so applicants should be able to get to work reliably and on time. Some roles involve standing for long periods, lifting packed cartons and working around mixers, trays and warm product. During load-shedding or other interruptions, the team stays focused on keeping production and dispatch moving as best we can.

  • Local applicants from Paarl, Wellington, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch, Somerset West and Durbanville are welcome to apply
  • Experience in food production, packing or dispatch is an advantage
  • For driving roles, a valid licence and clean record are important
  • For customer-facing roles, clear written communication matters

If you are coming from the coast or working with deliveries into humid areas, practical packing and storage awareness is useful too. Rusks travel well when handled correctly, and that makes consistency important from the bakery to the final customer.

Why people stay with us

People who enjoy structured work often settle in well here because the tasks are clear and the standards are sensible. There is pride in sending out a product that people enjoy with tea or coffee, and that feeling matters. We are a family-style business in the way we work, though every person still has to do their part.

We try to keep communication direct and fair. If you show up, work carefully and help the team during busy weeks, you will be valued. There is room to grow for the right person, especially if you show consistency over time and a genuine interest in the food business.
